15 month old breaking out of daycare and wandering the streets.. is this reasonable?
My son is 15 months old and at daycare they have these types of door handles…

Last week when I went to pick up my son I was talking with one of the workers at the daycare center and within seconds he had opened the door and and was outside running down the ramp. The daycare is only a few feet from the street and it’s a busy street. I saw it happen and got him very quickly before he was close to the road. BUT my sister JUST told me today that a couple weeks ago when she was walking by the daycare one of the workers was going after a kid and made a comment "we’ve got a lose one" and my sister looked and it was my son that she was running after. Well this was weeks ago and nobody from the daycare told me and the way my sister told me the story she said the worker made it seem like it was no big deal. This makes me think it happens often and they don’t even bother to tell me about it. He could EASILY get his by a car!! I’m really concerned and I am going to bring it up when I drop him off next. But I’ve also printed some things off and I’m going to tell them that I can either buy them one of these safety things or a door knob instead of them having a door handle where kids can easily open it. Is this unreasonable? I’m asking for others advise on how I should handle this. I will buy whatever it is to make it safer there. I’m not worried about the money.. the most i would spend would be like $20 and that’s obviously better than my son getting hurt. I am a single mom and I work full time. Last I knew all the daycares in town were full. I’m the only income so I don’t have the option of just pulling him out of daycare. I’m really worried for his safety though. Please just tell me what you think.. I know i’m rambling but i’m like shaking here. This freaks me out!!! Here are the things i printed off for ideas on what I could buy.

I think it is terrible that they allow this to happen, and the fact that they see this as normal is horrific. You are not being unreasonable in wanting to keep your child safe and i can understand you situation when it comes to keeping him in this daycare. Yes you should take to the person incharge of this daycare and explain to them the situation, maybe they will purchase what is needed to keep the children safe. But one thing that really bothers me is, don’t they have inspectors come round to check all of the daycares and assess them, telling them what needs to be improved and what not…?

Talk to the person that runs the daycare, if you can’t get this issue solved, maybe this daycare isn’t the safest place for you child.

Not only is is not normal, I’m pretty sure they could be cited for it. I believe they have to have a latching device to make it so kids can’t easily get out.
Think what would happen if they didn’t see him so quickly!
I think you need to be firm, and tell them you will give them one week to take care of the situation or you will be calling CPS (or whatever dept takes care of that in your state -in my state it’s the health department).

No of course that is not reasonable AT ALL (for a daycare to have things set up in a way that a young child could get outside by himself)!!! They need to get a child safety lock on that door. I understand that in order to get it done immediately you may buy one but it is their responsibility. I’d call them immediately and ask them to have it fixed before your child returns or offer to buy one and deduct the cost from your child’s tuition.
I’d also wonder what else they’re doing wrong and dangerously, to be honest.

It is absolutally in no way unreasonable for you to be concerned about your son being able to get out of the door at day car. It surprises me that they have those kinds of handles there.
Before suggesting that YOU buy new handles for the daycare I would demand to sit down with the director or owner and point out the problem and insist that it is fixed. This is your childs safety at stake and it is a daycares JOB to make sure he is safe while he is there.
ADDED~ I would also call the Department of Children and Families or whoever it is in your state that keeps watch on daycares and tell them the issue so that it HAS to be fixed. There may be other issues going on there also that you don’t know about.

Screw buying one for them. Call whatever state body oversees day cares, and call the other parents.

I would talk to the owner of the daycare & state your concern. If they do not do anything to take care of this issue (you should not have to pay for them to have proper doors) than you should take your son out. The daycare centers may be full, but you could look into licensed home day cares.
