My friends 7 month old daughter broke her leg falling down the stairs

She didn't have baby gates as daughter hadn't crawled yet but while in the toilet daughter made her first crawl and ended up downstairs!

It's therefore not to early to start baby proofing your house

Sockets, stairs, wires, corners of coffee tables etc. Maybe lie down on the floor and look about so you get to see things from baby's perspective, you'll see what they'll be interested in and potential hazards
References :
The only safety things we got were two stair gates - one for the top and one for the bottom.

Everything else we taught them about the dangers. We also taught about the dangers of stairs but this is one danger we weren't going to risk.

I live in a town house which meant out living room is on their first floor, so when my baby was in his walker, we had to have something covering the top of one flight of stairs because he could easily tip his walker down them. In terms of being in a *normal* house, you would be at the bottom of the stairs when he is in the walker, so it wouldn't really cause a problem? Maybe once he starts walking because he could go up a couple of stairs and then fall off, but that's if you let him out of the room on his own?

We also had one across the top of the flight of stairs where the bedrooms are, once he started walking, so he wouldn't fall down there should he get up in the night. I didn't put it across the front of his room, so he could come into our room, next door, or the bathroom, so the went with the top of the stairs. But I'd go with something over the top of the stairs for nighttime, because half asleep kids get confused at times.

I never had anything to cover radiators, didn't no there was such a thing. I agree with those things you put in plug sockets so they cant stick their finger in is a must because in a walker they're at the perfect height.

I never blocked him out of the kitchen either, we just had a rule of staying over a line in the flooring when mummy was cooking. But that's more due to my kitchen layout, but again teaching them "no" has to start somewhere. Never had cupboard locks or anything like that either, but they exist too.
References :
My son is 10 months. We don't have stairs so we didn't get a stair gate. If you feel you need a stair gate then get it. Your baby will be really exploring soon so I would advise you to get the socket safety plugs and a fire gaurd - the safety one that you can drill in the wall. It just creates peace of mind. Your baby is growing so fast already and will soon be crawling and climbing so its betterto be ready for this.

That depends on what you see as hazards in your home
I didn't have a stair gate, but many do
Maybe think about socket covers as toddlers do tend to stick their fingers into things
Think also about your kitchen, some people have a gate across their kitchen to stop their toddler getting into what is a dangerous area of the home
Just use common sense and have a look around your own home for any potential dangers
as toddlers are naturally inquisitive and you haven't got eyes in the back of your head :)
References :
mum of 3

i would get something for in front of the radiators & stairs because that can cause some SERIOUS damage. and kids are super curious. and if you bring him to the hospital if he burns himself on the radiator.. or he falls down a flight of stairs.. be prepared to be accused of child neglect. its better to be safe than sorry, you can get cheap gates at walmart for $15-20. its better to be safe than sorry.
References :
Of course there is good reason!

A baby / small child does not now that if they fall down the stairs they can end up in hospital.

It takes two seconds of you not watching them to get half way up the stairs and then fall!!

I don't see why you would not want to protect your child?

I would also recommend getting them in place now as they can begin to crawl at any time, and not necessarily when you are watching them.
References :
We have ine similar to this (link posted below) it works awsome, The plastic ones are too sketchy for me as my 1 year old likes to rock it at the top of the stairs. At least this one is installed into the studs so there is no way it coming crashing down. ( they also are much cheaper then the plastic ones and stretch really good, so if you have a wide hall way it will probably work. )

P.S the only thing about it is it s little weird to open , after you've done it a few times you'll be a pro but be prepared to have to open it up for guest sa lot.
References :
http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0462250P/no-60-in-wooden-baby-gate-reviews/reviews.htm
