Suggestions for keeping the dog out of the cat litter?

So I couldn’t figure out why my dog had terrible gas, then I caught him eating cat poop! I have a small kitten that just started using a litter box, she can’t climb my stairs yet so I can’t put the litter box in my basement yet (the dog can’t get down there) I have the litter box in my room until she is big enough to go downstairs but the dog seems to find his way in there and eats her poop! If I put up a child safety gate then the kitten can’t get in to her litter box, same if I shut the door. So until my kitten is big enough to use my stairs how can I keep my dog out of her litter box?

Get a litter pan with a cover that’s too small for the dog to enter.
Cut a small hole in the door or child safety gate.

other than making it physically impossible to get to it I know of none. The reason it is so attractive to is because most cat food is a lot higher in protein than dog food is. When you see what dogs are willing to do for protein, you can understand why the manufactures who produce dog food get away with such poor ingredient. This is another reason to read the labels and buy the best food for your pet you can afford.

I don’t know how trained your dog is but the ‘leave it’ command works wonders. Once he knows it, if you see him go to the cat litter tell him to ‘leave it’ as soon as he does reward him, he’ll soon get bored of it.

The only thing I can think of is to put up some kind of blockade that blocks the dog but leaves a few inches of space between the ground and the bottom of the block for the kitten to squeeze under. For instance if you’re using a baby gate you could put something at both edges of the doorway to set the gate on so that it will stay in place but so there’s still a hole for the kitten to go through. If your dog is small enough to squeeze under the same things the kitten can then unfortunately I don’t know what else you could do :-(
