suggestions for a baby gate?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I have a 7 month old baby who is started to become mobile, he will be fully crawling in just a few weeks. our upstairs will be the play room area but our stair case is very wide, and a normal baby gate does not fit it, also our house is very colonial house and i dont think a plastic one would look so great, any suggestions where i would get one?

Check out Kid co. they have all sorts of different gates.

how can i baby-proof cabinets that were built in the 70’s?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

i have a 13 month old and he gets into everything so we’re trying to baby proof. but our house was built some time ago, and the cabinets just slide left to riight and are wooden. they have little holes to open them with but thats pretty much it. i’m not sure how to keep this closed to what child proofing tool could be used here. ALSO our living room has a huge gap, and i cant seem to find a baby gate long enough to stretch, its probably 10+ feet wide. please any ideas??

Well, first of all, the first answer was kind of mean :)

I think you should get some velcro and use it on the back of the "sliders" to stop it from sliding easily. Or you could get some eye hooks (like the ones some people use on screen doors).

As far as the gates, we have the same problem and I think we are going to get those really long ones. I don’t think we have many options!

Here is what I’m talking about for both …

Help buying stair gates please?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

My 7 month old baby boy is starting to get a little bit mobile so we’ve decided it’s time for stair gates. To be honest, I’ve been putting it off because we seem to have a really awkward house.

For the stairs, we need extra wide gates and, preferably, with no bar along the bottom. I’ve been researching and have found one which is screwed into one wall but pressure fit to the other which does not have a bar. This sounds perfect for the bottom of the stair but I have 1 concern…. how can one side be pressure fit if there is no bar? surely the pressure fit side would need something against it to apply the pressure?

For the top of the stairs we need a pressure fit gate as we have spindles on the bannister and I need the Y shaped adaptors so again, the above gate would be great if I could be sure that the pressure fit would work.

Does anyone have one of these gates? If so, where did you get it and how does it work?

Thankyou in advance for your answers
I would change the spindles if I could but being on £123 a week for 9 months and, since the new PM has decided to increase VAT and reduce my tax credits, I’m trying to avoid that if I can!

Hi, we had similar problems in our house, needed 3 gates and ended up having to get a dog gate for one of the staircases, anyway…ours screw both sides and don’t have trip bars, they’re wooden ones by Lindam.

My main advice would be to be wary of pressure gates, we used to have one but it fell off suddenly in the middle of the night (after months of being fine), my friend’s one came off at the top of the stairs when her toddler jumped against it – cue one 2 year old in hospital with an arm broken in 3 places and a shattered cheekbone. Nasty. I do know others that use them just fine but screw them in properly if you can find a way!

I am looking for a Baby Gate?

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

My dogs are going to a sitter next weekend and we need a LONG baby gate for the sitters house.
Where is a good place to find a LONG baby gate?
It is for a walk way, I guess you can call it. I am not sure how wide the area is. I just know it needs to be long
no time to order one. Ill just have to go look at the stores, so i can get a better look at them.
Buxy- Thanks
= ) – i dont need a play pen. i need a baby gate for the sitter to keep the dogs in the kitchen. i need a long gate. i just have the short ones that fit in a door way.
um the person with the smile =)
that is not even in US dollars and its out of stock.

Baby’s R Us Or Mothercare.

I brought a playpen from Baby’s R us for 80pounds. It can convert into a gate for stairs and to a huge long barrier for fires/guarding patio doors ect..

Have a look at the one I brought!

Is both a playpen AND a long guard :]

Suggestions for screwless, wide baby gates that work with baseboards?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

We were given a gate, but it requires several holes in the wall on each side (we would prefer to be able to easily move it to another doorway) and cannot go on our baseboards. I am looking for a gate online right now, but it is hard to tell which ones might work. Does anyone know of a good drop-in type gate that allows you to do a different width on the plungers for the bottom (baseboards) vs. the top? I don’t want to leave a four inch gap at the bottom for my daughter to get her legs stuck in. I would prefer if it were available through Target, as I have a giftcard, but any suggestions would be welcome.

We have this one:

and although the packaging said it was ideal for uneven surfaces (i.e. baseboards), it doesn’t fit well. But, I do like it in other areas of the home – especially since it doesn’t have any horizontal bars for our little climber to gain leverage on. It expands quite a bit.

Something like this would probably work better:

We have one similar to it. It’s pressure mounted, so no holes in the walls or woodwork. All four corners are individually adjustable, so I would imagine it would work well for uneven surfaces. I installed ours myself – it was super easy. This is not a gate that’s intended to be taken out frequently and moved elsewhere – which is why it has the walk-through door. I LOVE ours, can’t say enough good things about it. And again, a big reason I chose a gate like this with all vertical bars was because our daughter is a mini Houdini! Gates like these don’t promote climbing.

ETA: I found the exact one we own:

But, for a very wide opening, you’d need to purchase another extension for it.

Sorry, I also realized the link I posted to the second product was wrong. I fixed it.

Good luck!
