Any suggestions for a top of the stairs baby gate that there isn’t anything to drill it into?

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

We have railings at the top of the stairs and I bought the kidco no drill baby gate installation kits and a baby gate but it turns out my railings aren’t straight across and the way they are placed it won’t work to put a baby gate on. I am in desperate need to put a gate in front of these stairs as the second I set my son down he goes straight for the stairs… has anyone had this problem with gates? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could put in front of the stairs that would work just as good?!
The Kidco no drill kit works perfect for our other railing to attach the gate to… but our stairs going down the 2 posts for the railing aren’t straight across so the gate would be going diagonal and I don’t think the latches will work then so I’m wondering if there is some other type of gate I can put there that it wont matter if it is diagonal

(a) Install 2 additional, upright ‘posts’ to your existing railing to accommodate the baby gate.
(b) Just install the baby gate to nearest the doorway and prevent your baby from getting near the stairway.

Aluminum or wood childrens swing gate?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I am struggling to find kiddy gate that doesn’t rely on pressure to keep it up, I have a dream baby gate and I am constantly tightning it up as one side of it is on a railing that has a little moment in it. I am looking for a pre fabricated aluminum gate that I can screw to the wall and swing on hinges. It looks like Dream Baby have a monopoly on the Australian market, all of the baby stores I have checked and Bunnings stock them exclusively. Kmart and Big W have different brands but there still work the same.

My only other option is to go to a metal fabricator and get one made but I would of thought that there has to be something generally available.

I found two US companies that make suitable gates (Evenflo and Kidco) but I can’t find Aussie distributors

Thanks

Aluminum , WOOD SPLINTERS!

15 month old breaking out of daycare and wandering the streets.. is this reasonable?

My son is 15 months old and at daycare they have these types of door handles…
http://dailyhomerenotips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/door-handle-instal-013.jpg

Last week when I went to pick up my son I was talking with one of the workers at the daycare center and within seconds he had opened the door and and was outside running down the ramp. The daycare is only a few feet from the street and it’s a busy street. I saw it happen and got him very quickly before he was close to the road. BUT my sister JUST told me today that a couple weeks ago when she was walking by the daycare one of the workers was going after a kid and made a comment "we’ve got a lose one" and my sister looked and it was my son that she was running after. Well this was weeks ago and nobody from the daycare told me and the way my sister told me the story she said the worker made it seem like it was no big deal. This makes me think it happends often and they don’t even bother to tell me about it. He could EASILY get his by a car!! I’m really concerned and I am going to bring it up when I drop him off next. But I’ve also printed some things off and I’m going to tell them that I can either buy them one of these saftey things or a door knob instead of them having a door handle where kids can easily open it. Is this unreasonable? I’m asking for other’s advise on how I should handle this. I will buy whatever it is to make it safer there. I’m not worried about the money.. the most i would spend would be like $20 and that’s obviously better than my son getting hurt. Please just tell me what you think.. I know i’m rambling but i’m like shaking here. This freaks me out!!! Here are the things i printed off for ideas on what I could buy.

I’d be freaking out too! If it were me I would start looking for a new daycare. It sounds like kids are getting out often, which is alarming and potentially dangerous. It would also bother me that they didn’t feel the need to mention anything to you about it. I don’t think you should have to buy them anything just find a more competent daycare.

Last I knew all the daycares in town were full. I’m the only income so I don’t have the option of just pulling him out of daycare. I’m really worried for his safety though. Please just tell me what you think.. I know i’m rambling but i’m like shaking here. This freaks me out!!! Here are the things i printed off for ideas on what I could buy.

I think it is terrible that they allow this to happen, and the fact that they see this as normal is horrific. You are not being unreasonable in wanting to keep your child safe and i can understand you situation when it comes to keeping him in this daycare. Yes you should take to the person incharge of this daycare and explain to them the situation, maybe they will purchase what is needed to keep the children safe. But one thing that really bothers me is, don’t they have inspectors come round to check all of the daycares and assess them, telling them what needs to be improved and what not…?
