How can my child pass the Gate test ?

Friday, November 26th, 2010

She is in 5th grade and we live in California and she said that the test haves patterns . She was aways in gate class but , she took the test and failed both times. She was moved to the perficant group and she hates her new teacher and wants to go back to the advance group . Maybe some sample questions will help or advice . PLEASE HELP!!

This is a fairly common problem for children who are "advanced" as young children but not truly gifted. The other children have "caught up" with your daughter. Accept your daughter for the wonderful, smart child she is and don’t try to coach her into the gifted program. It is only going to get harder for her to be able to keep up.

You might want to consider YOUR attitude about the situation. If you are unhappy she is in the "proficient" group your daughter will pick up on it. She is probably reflecting your reaction to her "failure". Let your daughter know you are proud of her even if she isn’t in the GATE program. There is nothing wrong with being average!!!

When is a child too old to be penned in their room with a baby gate?

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

The child in question is 4. His mother puts him in his room to "play" but feels the need to gate him in. She gates him in at night, but I can understand that. Then he can’t get up and wonder around when everyone’s asleep.

During the day though she likes to sleep in and leave him in there until she’s ready to get up. He yells and cries for her to come get him, but sometimes that goes on for more than an hour. I think that’s pretty lazy. Plus the kid doesn’t have access to a bathroom and is only beginning to potty train at 4! Sometimes she will get up at 10:30, change his diaper and put him back in his room (with the gate closed) until she feels like letting him out.

What is your opinion on this?

I don’t think a child should EVER be "penned" in, night or day. And certainly not at 4 years of age. A 4 year old shouldn’t be wandering around at night, they should know better, and they should be sleeping.

If the child sleepwalks, and it’s a big safety issue, then a baby gate is necessary. But barring that, I can not understand the need to ever "pen" in a 4 year old.

What this woman is doing is called "neglect" and she could be criminally liable.

If someone stole Bill Gate’s sperm and then impregnated themselves with it and had a child..?

would that child be entitled to Bill Gate’s fortune, or part of it

I think they would get 100 shares of Microsoft.

When could your child use the stairs?

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

How old was your child when you got rid of the gate to the stairs?

Three, but you have to teach them to hold the railing and take it slow. But when they are younger they will do the crawl up the stairs. As for gate at the top of the stairs it is really your best judgement to when you believe your child understands the danger of the stairs or defiently until they are able to stand for minutes at a time without falling or wobbling.

When did you take off your child safety gate?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

at the top of the stairs? I now live in a quad level home with 2 main stairways that are about 8 steps each…I used to live in an apartment that had a full set stairway and I kept a gate at the top. Now that we moved, Olivia seems to be doing good with these 2 stairways. Shes had one close call in the middle of one stairway, but caught herself. Since shes doing so well with them I don’t feel like they are completely necessary. Olivia will be 2 next month by the way.
I do put 1 up at night when she goes to bed! Sorry I forgot to mention that!

my son is 2 1/2 and i still use the baby gates. you can never be too safe.

How child safe are pools if a 5 ft gate is installed around it?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

We are purchasing a home with a pool and I am putting in a premier child proof gate around it, 5 ft tall. Has anyone had or heard of any problems if there is a gate around the pool?

I personally haven’t heard of any incidents with a proper safety fence installed around the pool (I assume you’re speaking of the safety mesh pool fencing here… or some variation of it, perhaps?) But, accidents still can happen. The best approach is several layers of protection. Don’t rely on the pool fence alone. Other things to consider would be a pool alarm (the type that goes off at the pool and in the house when a large object falls into the water), gate alarms, or even safety covers. (Generally used on inground pools.)

Also, as I’m sure you know, there is no substitute for responsible adult awareness. Keep an eye on young children when they’re in the backyard, especailly in or near the pool area.
