how can i baby-proof cabinets that were built in the 70’s?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

i have a 13 month old and he gets into everything so we’re trying to baby proof. but our house was built some time ago, and the cabinets just slide left to riight and are wooden. they have little holes to open them with but thats pretty much it. i’m not sure how to keep this closed to what child proofing tool could be used here. ALSO our living room has a huge gap, and i cant seem to find a baby gate long enough to stretch, its probably 10+ feet wide. please any ideas??

Well, first of all, the first answer was kind of mean :)

I think you should get some velcro and use it on the back of the "sliders" to stop it from sliding easily. Or you could get some eye hooks (like the ones some people use on screen doors).

As far as the gates, we have the same problem and I think we are going to get those really long ones. I don’t think we have many options!

Here is what I’m talking about for both …

Aluminum or wood childrens swing gate?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I am struggling to find kiddy gate that doesn’t rely on pressure to keep it up, I have a dream baby gate and I am constantly tightning it up as one side of it is on a railing that has a little moment in it. I am looking for a pre fabricated aluminum gate that I can screw to the wall and swing on hinges. It looks like Dream Baby have a monopoly on the Australian market, all of the baby stores I have checked and Bunnings stock them exclusively. Kmart and Big W have different brands but there still work the same.

My only other option is to go to a metal fabricator and get one made but I would of thought that there has to be something generally available.

I found two US companies that make suitable gates (Evenflo and Kidco) but I can’t find Aussie distributors

Thanks

Aluminum , WOOD SPLINTERS!

What is the best baby gate for top of stairs?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

I just bought the Safety 1st Perfect fit, it’s wall mounted on top of my stairs and I don’t trust it. Also every time you open it you have to readjust it loosing its one hand open feature. Please share your experience.
Thank you!
@barfly: So I should teach my 9m old (and walking) not to fall down the stairs and yet make sure the cabinets are locked? Sorry, a gate is a must. Anybody with kids have any suggestions?

I have Dreambaby gates and love them. They’re metal and come in black or white. I have the standard size at the top of the stairs, and the extra-tall ones blocking access to the bottom of the stairs in the hallway. It takes a while to mount them properly, but the instructions are good and they’re strudy once mounted. They also swing closed automatically in both directions, though the click in kind of loud so I usually close them gently by hand. I ordered them online. They were more expensive than many gates, but totally worth it. You can open the gate easily with one hand.

You need to measure the space exactly, then buy any extensions you may need. The bottom and top of the space may be slightly different widths if you have a baseboard, but the mounting cups can screw out to different lengths. The more they’re screwed out, the less secure it is (thus the importance of getting extensions, if needed, rather than screwing out the mounting cups to the maximum). I wouldn’t trust any gate enough to lean against it at the top of the stairs, but ours has held firm every time we’ve bumped into it by accident, and it’s steady when my 13 month old daughter tries to shake the bars.

If someone stole Bill Gate’s sperm and then impregnated themselves with it and had a child..?

would that child be entitled to Bill Gate’s fortune, or part of it

I think they would get 100 shares of Microsoft.
