Through the Children's Gate
Not long after Adam Gopnik returned to New York at the end of 2000 with his wife and two small children, they witnessed one of the great and tragic events of the city’s history. In his sketches and glimpses of people and places, Gopnik builds a portrait of our altered New York: the changes in manners, the way children are raised, our plans for and accounts of ourselves, and how life moves forward after tragedy. Rich with Gopnik’s signature charm, wit, and “joie de vivre,” here is the most under-examined corner of the romance of New York: our struggle to turn the glamorous metropolis that seduces us into the home we cannot imagine leaving.

Need an extra long (8 feet) baby gate?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I have been doing some research and found one http://www.walmart.com/ip/Summer-Infant-Sure-Secure-Super-Wide-Custom-Fit-Gate/8465717
that is long enough, but it’s mesh and I’m not sure how well that actually works.

Does anyone have suggestions? I need one with a ‘door’ and also, it needs to screw to the wall.

Thanks!!!

Have you checked One Step Ahead? They have some great options for large areas:

Children treated as animals! Oh, the horror!!!?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I’ve noticed this lovely trend of treatin children as animals. What are people thinking? They cage them at night in these devices they call "cribs"! They restrain them against their will in these devices they call "car seats"! They block their paths with these things they call "Child Safety Gates"! They block them out of cupboards and drawers with "Child-proofing devices"!

Oh the horror! These lazy parents!!! Why don’t they simply teach their children how to behave and follow directions? What kind of people treat their children as animals?? It breaks my heart to think of all the children being mistreated this way.

And the newest horror they are subjecting these poor, helpless children to… a leash! OMG! What’s next? How dare these people, let these children walk happily and safely. They should be roaming Walmart freely at will, or better yet, restrained properly in a stroller, miserable as can be!

Your thoughts? Have I missed any new-fangled torture devices in my list? ;) ;) Am feeling alittle plucky today… can you tell?
Okay, so I forgot about the bottles and playpens… seems my list is incomplete. lol. :)
Sarah: This question is "tongue-in-cheek". I very recently read a rather derrogative question regarding the usage of child safety leashes. It irritated me, what can I say? I find it absurd, that you can use a crib, a carseat, strap a miserable child in a stroller, and be a good parent, but if you let the child walk, happy and safe… all of a sudden you are the worst parent in the world? I think not! My point was simply this, we restrain our young offspring in many different ways, everyday, what is the difference between a leash and a crib/carseat/stroller/etc? How is one acceptable and the other not?

lol! You’ve read that leash question haven’t you?

Yep you’ve fogotten baby bottles which are obviously made in a way to remind a cow’s tit which is meant to brainwash the child into believing he’s a calf.
