I am looking for a baby gate for an opening the is just short of 5 feet wide. It needs to have a hardware mount because the opening is on a slight angle, pressure mount will not work. Can any mommies or daddies out there suggest a gate they have used (and liked) that might work for this area? So far the accordion fold ones are about all that looks like it might work, but I worry she might get hurt with that style of gate. Thanks!
Smurfy – I had to laugh when I clicked on your link, that is the gate we have for our stairway and I love it too! unfortunately it does not extend far enough for the opening we need to close off.

Hubby is building a Rod Iron gate for a 4′ opening at the top of some stairs from our patio to keep the baby safe. After trying several pressure mount gates that just don’t work, we decided to build one of our own (which will also match the gate round our pool) and work well for us for years to come. It’s a 5 step stairway that is used by us frequently, having something that is child safe yet, easy for adults to open and close frequently is important. You might ask welding/fencing companies what they would charge for a child safe gate for your application (home or yard). It may be cheaper than buying anything ready made.

He is into everything and I’m new in the UK, does anyone know where I can find home safety stuff, like outlet cover plugs, baby gates for the stairs etc.? Also where would be a good place to buy developmental toys for this stage? I appreciate any help.

Boots ( chemists) are usually found in smallish towns. Larger towns will have the bigger stores that stock the widest ranges.
Also Toys R Us, John Lewis department stores, Early Learning Centre shops, Mothercare – these as the name suggests, are a specialist store for babies and toddlers and older too. They are often found in out of town shopping centres as well as some high streets.

Toys: Look for ones that will increase his hand -eye co-ordination or dexterity. 2 or 3 piece "jigsaws", Toy hammer and pegs, the larger push button interactive style toys; tray style boards with different shaped pictures cut out and with small pegs that let him slot the cut-out back into the correct shape.
Important at any age are books, especially at his stage the cardboard style with large pictures and one or two words, story books with large pictures that you can read to him and let him point to things illustrated in the picture.
