Should my dog be free in the house?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I really dont understand. my parents dont trust my dog for some reason and hes two. hes a yorkie and during the day hes outside so he cant chew things and mess things up. I kinda get that part, even though i dont think he should be outside alone all day. But what i really dont understand is why he has to go in this crate thing when we get home and let him inside. He runs arond the house and we play with him, but when we cant watch him or when we go out, we put him in there. Its not one of those small crates for training. its pretty big and wide. imagine a baby gate that u put between the door, but on all four sides and longer. and i didnt mind much before when he was a puppy, but hes practically an adult now and its not fair that he has to stay in that thing when we cant watch him. I just want him to be free in the house. they think he’ll pee and mess with stuff but he doesnt do any of that.

any way to get them to let him free around the house?

no because the dog will never learn where to poop and pee in the right place. let them go when you are going to walk or play with him. leave him in an area that he can poop and pee in. DO NOT put him on carpet!!!! Hope that helps:)

After the tragic death of Samara Ali, what safety hints can you give other parents?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

sadly little Samara died after falling out of a bedroom window, as a bed had been placed next to the window!
I never put beds near windows because this may happen! What tips can you give parents that may have jsut not thought of "What could happen if! "
I also tape up all my roller blind cables as they are can be used to hang a child, if they get caught up in them!
Keep saucepan and frying pan handles turned away from little hands! Always check the keetle is out of reach! Any hot drinks up high!
Stair gates closed! Any tips welcome! Thanks

parents should make sure that all electrics are ok so that children will not be electricute, all drugs, cultileries, tools should be kept out of reach

Who has responsibility for my child when he is walking to school?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

The school my child goes to will not allow the children into the playground before 8.45 prompt. I wish to know who is responsible if anything happens to a child whilst they are waiting outside school gates

You are responsible. They probably don’t have anybody to monitor the playground until then. They are doing this to prevent injuries.

Baby Gates!! Please Help!!?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

My daugther is only 22 months old! And is so smart she knows how to work the baby gates…and climb them!! I feel she is still way to young to have free wonder of the house as she is still at that stage of getting into everything! I can’t seem to find a way for her to understand the safety measures and why she can’t touch things!! I hate to spank but it seems to be the only thing that gets to her! Even though a minute after she finishes crying she’s right back at it! She wasn’t this bad until 2 weeks ago her sister was born..now it’s 10 times worst! I just don’t know what to do..as I was an only child my mother never climbed this mountian, so I can’t go to her for advice!

I feel for you!!! My daughter could climb before she could walk!! SHe was just about 11 months when I put her in a playpen and walked out of the room for less than two minutes when she climbed out and made her way to the kitchen where I was!!! I freaked!!! Needless to say baby gates and playpens never worked again!!! I just had to keep her near me always and keep a close eye on her… keeping doors of rooms closed with those childproof door knob covers on them. Also it is completely normal for children to go thru setbacks when new babies are born, regression… just be sure to pay a lot of attention and give lots of love to the older child so she doesn’t feel left out, having her help with the new baby also helps with that sibling jealousy!!! I have two daughters that are two years apart!! Good luck!!

Cat room confinement: Methods and techniques?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I have a cat that has a history of urinating on carpets, so when we looked for a new apartment, we found one that has 1/2 hard floors, 1/2 carpet. The carpeted area is everywhere, save the kitchen, bath, and back bedroom. The bedroom is the only place with a door, so this is where she is confined to for the time being.

We would like to get a gate or door for the next doorway, giving her access to the kitchen and bath, but have not found any solutions, past stacking two baby gates on top of one another. We were considering a screen door, or something with chicken wire, or perhaps a mission-style gate, but I want to do some research before we spend money (as we are both going to college, money is a concern). The door is an odd size, being 31.5" wide by 77" high.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Kudos on keeping the cat’s needs in mind while planning your move.

Can you use one of those oriental screen room dividers, maybe? I mean the folding room dividers. That should give you easy access while thoroughly blockin access to the cat.

Honestly though — if it were me, I’d train the cat. Despite popular belief, cats ARE trainable. It just takes time, patience, and trust. The screen or divider or whatever you use would be a good "backup" during re-training time; and a new environment (with new rugs that have never been peed on) can kickstart the process.
