good strong baby gate for people who have a big dog and a baby, want to fence off dog from baby?

January 18th, 2012

we need at least two baby gates, one for a doorway and one for a wide doorway. there is also a big dog in the house and want to keep dog in separate room from baby and need the gates to be strong and maybe even something we can leave up all the time like a gate that swings open

We have ine similar to this (link posted below) it works awsome, The plastic ones are too sketchy for me as my 1 year old likes to rock it at the top of the stairs. At least this one is installed into the studs so there is no way it coming crashing down. ( they also are much cheaper then the plastic ones and stretch really good, so if you have a wide hall way it will probably work. )

P.S the only thing about it is it s little weird to open , after you’ve done it a few times you’ll be a pro but be prepared to have to open it up for guest sa lot.

Can my 10 month old baby get through the pet door opening?

January 12th, 2012

I was browsing on Amazon looking at baby gates and I found one called (Carlson 0930PW Extra-Wide Walk-Thru Gate with Pet Door, White) I have a cat so I would like him to go through the pet door but I was wondering could my baby easily crawl through it? I’m wondering because I don’t want to buy something that doesn’t work. I wasn’t sure if this gate is more for pets than children.

The cat can jump over. The cat doesn’t need a pet door. You are underestimating how high cats can jump.

Stair gates & baby gates?

December 4th, 2011

I am in the middle of moving house this week, going from a ranch style to a two-story home and I am on the hunt for baby gates. I am having trouble finding baby gates wide enough and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or recommendations on gates that they like and what gates I should try to avoid.

I need one stair gate for the top of the stairs that needs to fit 41" wide, I want one the opens easily with a door or something. I also need an extra wide gate dividing the family room from the kitchen, which is 101.5" wide and the third gate needs to fit a 53" space.

This move is proving to be quit costly so I don’t have $200 to throw down on a super gate with a superdooper extension (especially seeing as I need three of them), I am trying to stay within a reasonable budget. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

leapsandbounds.com and onestepahead.com have an array of gates in several different finishes and sizes. they also have lots of other fantastic items that you just can’t find elsewhere. i ordered from them alot when my kids were little.

Suggestions for keeping the dog out of the cat litter?

November 24th, 2011

So I couldn’t figure out why my dog had terrible gas, then I caught him eating cat poop! I have a small kitten that just started using a litter box, she can’t climb my stairs yet so I can’t put the litter box in my basement yet (the dog can’t get down there) I have the litter box in my room until she is big enough to go downstairs but the dog seems to find his way in there and eats her poop! If I put up a child safety gate then the kitten can’t get in to her litter box, same if I shut the door. So until my kitten is big enough to use my stairs how can I keep my dog out of her litter box?

Get a litter pan with a cover that’s too small for the dog to enter.
Cut a small hole in the door or child safety gate.

Can anyone recommend a baby gate to use with a 10 month old baby and a 9 week old kitten?

November 9th, 2011

We need to keep the baby out of the bedroom (the en suite bathroom has the cat food and kitty litter), but obviously the kitten needs to be able to come in and out. We tried the "safety 1st easy fit security gate", and while it kept the baby out well, it was too tall for the kitten – he hurt his leg trying to climb up it, and was unable to just jump over.

Anyone have a specific suggestion for a gate that we can use? We don’t want one of the swinging ones that you screw in, because we want to be able to shut the bedroom door at times. So we just want one of the portable ones – strong enough to withstand a growing baby, short enough to let the kitten get around. We’re in Toronto in the Bathurst/Wilson area, so stores anywhere around there, or Canadian Tire, would be great.

thanks!
to respond to people’s answers:
the baby is always supervised, but if my back is turned for a moment it’s dangerous for her to have any kind of access to cat food and kitty litter.
we’re in an apartment, so there’s no other room available for the cat’s stuff, and we can’t put in cat doors anywhere.
the one recommended baby gate screws into the wall, so we wouldn’t be able to close the bedroom door – not doable.

can you raise the gate a little off the floor so cat can crawl under?

or, put food and litter up high, like on a table. as long as you have a chair for the cat to jump from, he will use it.

or, this is a lot more work, buy a cheap door, install pet door, keep door closed. cat gets in and out, baby cant.
when you move, put old door back on.

i think i found what you are looking for,

Having worked at Argos I found that the customer service in store is far better than the on line service. If there is no local shop you can phone on – 0845 640 2020 . This is for web based complaints. Good luck with that.

is hot sauce safe for me to put on a safety door gate for in the kitchen?

October 24th, 2011

my dog Sophy likes to chew big holes in the wooden safety gates , when ever I leave I would put her in the kitchen an dput the gate up, so she does not go in the livingroom and piss all over the carpet and destroy things. Now I bought a plastic child safety gate to put in the door way of the kitchen to keep her in the kitchen but I was going to rub into the plastic gate this HOT SAUCE. She is almost 2 years old and acting this way. I surely hope this hot sauce will be safe for her , Does any of you have any advice for me on how to prevent her from chewing holes into her gates when me or my man is gone from the house. I mean I thought she had it pretty easy with all of her toys and her bed and food and water and pee pad all in the kitchen for her. But that did not satisfy the spoiled rotten dog. she is mad because she left my parents in arkansas house that had five dogs for her to play with and now she is by herself and only with me and my boyfriend . We spoil her rotten. I don’t understand what her problem is and why she is doing this? She gets tons of love from me and my boyfriend and the food that she wants and she gets treats and everything so I really wish I knew what to do about her bad behavior with chewing holes and destroying wooden door gates to close off the kitchen to keep her from going into the livingroom? Is hot sauce alright to put on all over the gate? Will it make her sick or is it okay? Please let me know. my email is citygirltrp@yahoo.com. Thank you
We put her in the kitchen because I work long hours at walmart and my boyfriend is in college for eight hours of the day and then works at a job after his school so during the week we take her for a walk in the morning and afternoon and we put her in the kitchen. because of my work and his school we do not have time to take sophy to obedience school or even be able to aford a vet. We are very tight with money right now with dental bills and 33,000 dollars worth of bills. I put her in the crate all day and I come home to shit being in the crate water and dog food mixed in and ripped up pee pee pad and wet bed that she layed in. After that experience I said absolutely no more crate I’m sick of it!!!
The fact I work all day and then come home to have to clean that drives me insane!
I tried the hot sauce lightly on a hard plastic gate that I bought and she did not touch the gate what so ever. before the hot sauce I was using a special spray for no chewing that had flavor that was
A co worker of my boyfriends is bringing in Bitters apple for me for Sophy, I will also give that a try even tho the hot sauce worked . I put it on so light to where it won’t harm her. I do very much appreciate everyones advice thank you so much

Pet stores sell bitter apple sprays that most dogs dont like
Ive never used hot sauce before but the bitter apple has helped with my dogs tendency to grab our shoes when shes alone
A bottle the size of a regular water bottle costs $10 or so
Ull have to spray it once everyday for the bitter apple to stay

Child’s Stair gate – what age range are they suitable for?

October 24th, 2011

We currently live in a flat and always accompany our 4 year old daughter down the communal stairs, though she can walk up and down herself unaided. We are planning on buying a house with internal stairs, would she be too old to need a stair gate installed?

she should be ok at 4.

just watch her the first few times and make sure she does not run.
